Riptide

March 27, 2004 AM/Stanford

My Dad's a big baseball fan. Last year when he came out in March my neighbor Gerson and I packed up the kids and took him to Stanford's Sunken Diamond to watch some college ball. We had a great time, but our daughters just weren't that into it. On the way out from the game we noticed a women's softball tournament was going on, and we resolved that the following year we'd take the girls to watch women's softball instead.

This year the girls had a better time watching the women play, and they definitely enjoyed the lower-key atmosphere . Stanford beat Illinois 5-0 impressively, and went undefeated (7-0) in the tournament.

Dad, ever the socialite struck up a conversation with a nice older lady who turned out to be the mother of Stanford's catcher, Jessica Allister. She mentioned that both Jessica and the starting pitcher Dana Sorenson were recruited for the new Women's professional softball league which is just starting this year. They'll be on the New England Riptide, which plays in Lowel MA. The season starts in June.

I imagine the league is starting this year because its an Olympic year. They're must be hoping for a surge of interest. Good for them!
